Sleep Issues

What type of sleep issues do you face?

There are many and different type of sleep issues that one may face in the course of their life:

  • Insomnia: this accounts for the difficulty to fall asleep, the difficulty to stay asleep, the difficulty to have a good quality sleep.

  • Sleep apnea:  occurs when the throat relaxes too much during sleep, causing it to close and stop breathing. The most common type of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and can affect 10% of the population. It can lead to more serious problems, so it's important to get treatment.

  • Restless Leg Syndrome: this is a neurological disorder that causes an uncomfortable feeling in the legs and an irresistible urge to move them. The cause is unknown, but it's likely due to changes in dopamine and iron use in the brain. It can be associated with iron deficiency, pregnancy, and certain medications.

  • Nightmares and night terrors: they are different and tend to happen both in childhood and in adult life. While nightmares are normal, they sometimes are disturbing enough to prevent the person from staying asleep.

  • Snoring: well... it is a sleep issue for the individual but mainly for their partner ...

  • Narcolepsy: a rare long-term brain condition that can prevent a person from choosing when to wake or sleep. The brain is unable to regulate sleeping and waking patterns normally.

Not sleeping creates not only tiredness but also impacts how your day will go. It is also recognised now that it can impact physiological issues such as the brain function, the immune system, the endocrine functions, mood swings, slow thinking, etc.

In addition, it can also impact our relationship with others.

It is important you get formally diagnosed to rule out any other condition.

Cause and triggers

Physiological causes can impact sleep (e.g. throat restriction, position in bed) but most of the time, stress and anxiety are the primary causes. They themselves have specific causes (work stresses, burnout, relationship issues, racing mind, etc), and treatments require to look beyond the surface to address the root cause of the problem.

What can you do to alleviate the symptoms?

Food and drinking habits are well as exercise can help to manage the symptoms.

Room temperature and a good bedtime routine are also essential.

Relaxation will also help with stress management.

What solutions do we offer

Hypnotherapy

Hypnosis remains one of the most effective ways to treat stress, anxiety and sleep issues. It focuses on retraining the mind and addressing the underlying issues.

Under stress, the brain perceives that there is threat to your safety. It then switches on your fight of flight response, triggering responses in your body (turning on some signals like accelerated breathing, and turning off others like digestion). A prolonged exposure to stress will therefore disrupt some of your body responses on a long term basis.

Sophrology

Sophrology is relaxation method that combines physical and mental exercises. It brings you to a relaxed state where you can focus on your breath and positive memories. By becoming more aware of your body, we can help you improve your physical health. In addition, sophrology can help you develop a positive attitude towards life which in turns help with the management of symptoms.

We hold certificates specifically related to stress management.

Reiki

Reiki is a Japanese healing method where the practitioner hovers their hands over your body. We re-establish energy flows and release blockages. You may have sensations or nothing at all. Some of our clients report a warm or tingling feeling in their gut. As a result, you feel stress relief and metal and emotional clarity.

After the first Reiki session, you will likely feel strangely calm and your whole body will be very relaxed. After a few days, your general tonus and energy levels pick up if for any reason you were in need with this boost. The effects of Reiki are lasting and go beyond the area where you feel there are issues.

You can choose to come and see us as a result of an acute situation so we can relief you, otherwise anytime you want to rebalance your energy flows.
