How Hypnotherapy Can Help with Grief and Bereavement
Coping with Grief After the Loss of a Loved One
Nicole was 77 when her husband of 57 years died.
It was a beautiful April day, yet for the family it marked the end of six intense and emotional weeks spent largely at a hospital bedside. René had been diagnosed with lung cancer just six weeks earlier. The news came as a profound shock and instantly changed daily life for everyone around him.
Hospital appointments, medical discussions and visits quickly became the family's new routine. Children and grandchildren each processed the news in their own way. Travel plans were rearranged and priorities shifted as the family realised that time was limited. What nobody expected was how quickly events would unfold.
Six weeks after his diagnosis, Nicole’s husband passed away.
As often happens following a bereavement, every family member responded differently. Some focused on practical tasks, others cried openly, and some even used humour to cope. There is no right or wrong way to grieve.
Nicole was surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Some friends were incredibly supportive. Others disappeared shortly after the funeral, unsure of what to say or do. A few remained consistently present and supportive throughout the following year.
How Hypnotherapy Helped Reduce Distressing Memories
For Nicole, grief quickly became overwhelming.
She found herself repeatedly reliving the final weeks of Nicole’s husband life. Images of the hospital, medical procedures and difficult conversations replayed in her mind day after day. Tears came daily and sometimes lasted for hours.
When she came to see me, her request was very specific: "I am exhausted from replaying the hospital bed story over and over again."
We worked together in a single hypnotherapy session.
Following that session, something important changed. Nicole did not forget what had happened. She did not stop loving her husband, and she did not stop grieving. What changed was the relentless replaying of those final weeks. The memories remained, but the emotional intensity attached to them reduced significantly. When thoughts of the hospital arose, they no longer triggered the same overwhelming distress.

How Grief Can Affect Your Mind and Emotions
Several weeks later, Nicole returned with a different request. She wanted to stop crying.
Initially, I was hesitant. Crying is a natural and healthy expression of emotion, particularly during grief. It serves a purpose, and I would never automatically assume that crying should be stopped. We spent time discussing her experience in detail. We explored what the tears represented, how often they occurred, whether they felt helpful or exhausting, and what might happen if they reduced.
As therapists, our role is not to judge someone's choices. At the same time, we have a responsibility to assess the person and the situation carefully before proceeding. After a thorough discussion, and with appropriate safeguards in place, we agreed to work on this goal together.
We completed a second hypnotherapy session.
And she did not cry from that moment. She just felt she had done enough crying and she now needed to move to the next step of her grief journey.
A few days ago, Nicole shared that she had recently experienced another emotional and stressful situation. As she described it, she said: "But I didn't cry."
At first, I was surprised. The situation itself could easily have brought many people to tears. However, as I reflected on the conversation, I realised that for Nicole this represented something positive. It was not suppression. It was not avoidance. It was a choice she felt comfortable making. Rather than feeling overwhelmed by emotion, she felt more in control of how she responded. She felt relief. She had no regrets about the decision, and her voice conveyed a sense of calm and confidence that had been absent during the early stages of her grief.
Can Hypnotherapy Help During Bereavement?
Hypnotherapy can be a valuable tool in supporting people through bereavement and loss.
It can help reduce intrusive memories, calm overwhelming emotional responses, improve sleep, and create space for healing. What it cannot do, nor should it do, is erase love, memories or the natural process of grieving.
Every grief journey is unique.
Because every person experiences loss differently, the therapeutic approach must also be tailored to the individual. What works for one person may not be right for another. The goal is not to remove grief. The goal is to help people carry it more comfortably, so that life can gradually move forward while still honouring the person they have lost.

The Power of Holistic Therapies
At Eyeris Health, we offer a range of holistic therapies designed to support mental, emotional, and physical well-being. These include hypnotherapy, sophrology, reiki, and systemic constellations. Each therapy offers unique benefits and can be tailored to meet individual needs.
Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy is a powerful tool for change. It helps clients tap into their subconscious mind to address fears, anxieties, and limiting beliefs. Through guided relaxation, clients can explore their thoughts and feelings in a safe environment.
Sophrology
Sophrology combines relaxation techniques, breathing exercises, and visualisation to promote well-being. It is particularly effective for managing stress and enhancing self-awareness. Clients often find it helps them feel more grounded and centred.
Reiki
Reiki is an energy healing practice that promotes relaxation and balance. It can help alleviate physical and emotional pain, allowing clients to release tension and find peace. Many clients report feeling a deep sense of calm after a session.
Systemic Constellations
Systemic constellations explore family dynamics and patterns that may be affecting an individual’s life. By bringing these patterns to light, clients can gain insight and understanding, leading to healing and resolution.
