From Anxiety to Fear of Flying: Meet Holly in Horsham, West Sussex

When Holly, 22, first came to see me a couple of months ago, she was preparing for the trip of a lifetime — several months travelling across Southeast Asia. Instead of feeling excited, she felt overwhelmed.

By nature, Holly is a little anxious. The combination of planning a long trip, leaving home for the first time, and a long-standing fear of flying had started to take a toll on her. Her sleep became disrupted, and as the departure date approached, her mind raced with worry.

We resolved her sleep difficulties in one session. With her upcoming travels in mind, we used a second session to gently work through the emotional layers surrounding leaving home, being away from her mum, and the practical stress of preparing for such a big adventure. But then came the biggest challenge.

A Crippling Fear of Flying - With Only One Week to Go

Holly had lived with a fear of flying for several years. This fear was intensified by hearing about the Air India crash a year ago. Even the thought of boarding a plane sent her into a spiral of dread.

Now, she was just one week away from a long-haul flight.

Typically, treating a flying phobia can take up to six sessions. However, we had time for only one. Holly was motivated. She had already demonstrated in previous sessions that she could make rapid, meaningful changes in her life. So, we decided to embark on a focused, rapid-transformation session.

What We Worked On

Together, we explored several key areas:

  • When the fear first began

  • What specifically triggered it

  • How it felt in her body

  • What she imagined would go wrong

  • What the best parts of travelling might be

  • What could help her feel grounded and safe

  • What she wanted her mind to do instead

We reframed old associations, rewired the fear response, and built new emotional pathways that supported calm, confidence, and a sense of inner steadiness.

To support her further, I created a personalised audio recording for her to listen to before the flight — and again just as she was boarding, when her anxiety tended to peak.

And just in case, we introduced the idea of drifting into sleep during the flight, so her mind wouldn’t have time to spiral into fear.

Three Days Later...

I opened my inbox to find a message from Holly — along with a beautiful photo from Sri Lanka.

“Stephanie, I made it!! Thank you so much!!!☺️ It was really good! I listened to your audio, and it helped so much (especially during turbulence!). I fell asleep an hour into the flight and woke up during landing ⭐️ So amazing, thank you!!!”

A New Chapter

Holly didn’t just get on the plane — she arrived calm, rested, and proud of herself. Her fear no longer dictated her choices. She began her travels with confidence, freedom, and a sense of possibility.

And that’s the power of targeted hypnotherapy: When the mind learns a new way to respond, everything changes.

Signs Hypnotherapy Can Help You Too

If you recognise yourself in Holly’s story — the spiralling thoughts before a trip, the sleepless nights, the “what ifs” that tighten your chest, or a fear of flying that feels bigger than logic — hypnotherapy can offer a powerful, evidence-based way forward.

Many people don’t realise that fears and phobias are learned responses. The mind can relearn safety far more quickly than they expect. Whether your anxiety shows up as physical tension, racing thoughts, avoidance, or a sense of losing control, hypnotherapy can help you gently rewire those patterns. This way, you can travel, explore, and live with more freedom and ease.

The Benefits of Holistic Approaches

Holistic therapies like hypnotherapy, sophrology, reiki, and systemic constellations provide a comprehensive approach to mental and emotional health. Each method offers unique benefits, helping individuals find balance and peace.

Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is a powerful tool for addressing fears and phobias. It allows individuals to access their subconscious mind, where deep-seated beliefs and fears reside. By working through these issues, clients can create new, positive associations.

Sophrology

Sophrology combines relaxation techniques with mindfulness. It helps individuals manage stress and anxiety, promoting a sense of calm and well-being. This practice can be particularly beneficial for those facing challenges like fear of flying.

Reiki

Reiki is an energy healing technique that promotes relaxation and healing. It can help release emotional blockages and reduce anxiety, making it a valuable addition to any holistic approach.

Systemic Constellations

Systemic constellations explore family dynamics and personal relationships. This method can uncover hidden patterns that contribute to anxiety and fear, providing insights and healing.
